 10 Tips for Becoming an Attic Room Organizer

You are probably like most homeowners; you know your attic room could be better organized, but you have no idea where to start. Whether it’s all those holiday decorations that get stored up there or the excess furniture taking up space, there are so many things in your attic room that need to be sorted through and taken care of, which can make it seem like more trouble than it’s worth to even start organizing your attic room in the first place.

1) Clear the clutter

Before you start organizing, it’s important to clean out your attic room. Toss out any items that are broken or beyond repair. Donate items that others may use, and get rid of what’s left by recycling or throwing them away. No need to be a hoarder! Just take care of business up front so you have less to do later on down the line.

2) Pick up the pieces

Cleaning out your attic can be overwhelming. But with a few simple steps, you can clean it out and make room to organize things easily. Start by getting rid of anything that is broken or unneeded and bagging it up to take to Goodwill. If you have items you’re unsure about, consider donating them to charity and seeing if they are in better condition than expected. Once you’ve cleared out all unnecessary items, start organizing what remains. You can group similar items together into boxes so that everything has its place. This will help keep your home tidy and organized even when you don’t have time to tackle big projects like cleaning out your attic!

3) If it doesn’t bring you joy, discard it

If you’re a pack rat and can’t let go of your old toys, clothes or books, don’t. They will only clutter up your attic rooms and remind you of all of those memories that are best left forgotten. If it doesn’t bring you joy, discard it. Whether it is a book from college or a favorite toy from childhood, if you haven’t touched or thought about it in years then there is no reason to keep it around. The same goes for clothing; if you haven’t worn something in over a year, get rid of it. When was the last time you wore that dress? Or those shoes? Donate them to charity or sell them online; just get them out of your home so they aren’t taking up space anymore. The same goes for things like kitchen appliances and furniture; while they may be useful someday, they aren’t now—so get rid of them!

4) When in doubt, donate it!

If you’re not sure if something has value or will fit into your life, don’t keep it around. If it’s clutter and you know it, get rid of it. Decluttering your space creates mental clarity, which leads to less stress. You may find that you have extra space once things are organized and can donate unwanted items. Maybe others need them more than you do! It feels good to help others and stay organized at home, too. Check out a few local charities and see what they accept; some might even come pick up donations from you.

If you don’t have a good handle on how you want to organize your attic room, take some time to research different methods. Visit local storage facilities and ask questions, speak with friends and family about their systems, and look through magazines at your local newsstand or library. There are myriad ways to optimize your space; trust yourself to find something that works best for you and your household.

6) Don’t overthink organizing your items

Start by simplifying your life instead of trying to organize everything in your attic. The first step toward becoming an attic room organizer is to stop living in clutter, and that means getting rid of unneeded items. If you start with a clean slate, it will be easier to organize what’s left behind. Plus, once you get rid of stuff, you can actually see what needs organizing! 7) Manage down time and transition spaces

Regardless of how much down time you have at your job, you probably spend some of it moving around between tasks and activities. This is especially true in transition spaces—spaces that require a change in activity (from sitting to standing, or vice versa). Prepare to travel as efficiently as possible by packing up your things as soon as they are no longer needed. If you leave them out, chances are good that other items will end up on top of them or nearby. Then, when it comes time to pack everything back up again, you’ll be faced with a messier situation than necessary. Remember: Efficiency is key!

8) Make reorganizing easy on yourself

If you can break down your attic reorganization project into smaller parts, you’ll make it easier on yourself. De-clutter a single box at a time, and before long you’ll have finished everything! It takes more time to do it all at once, but you’re less likely to lose motivation by taking it one box at a time. Plus, as each box is done and put away, your space will look cleaner and cleaner!

9) Take it one item at a time

As you begin to clear out your attic room, take each item in one at a time. This will help with reducing overwhelm and making it easier to decide what goes and what stays. If there are items that have sentimental value, put them aside so you can deal with them last. If there are items that need to be thrown away or donated immediately, put those aside as well so they don’t distract from your task of organizing. If possible, have a trash bag and donation box handy so you can quickly dispose of things as you go along.

10) Create a system that works best for you

If you’re just getting started, go with what works best for you. If that means doing a combination of everything on our list, so be it. There’s no right way to organize your attic room; just find something that works and keep going until it doesn’t. The more systems you create—and keep up with—the more organized your home will become.
